In a major development, Dale Steyn has announced he has stepped down from the bowling coach role for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The former South African pacer however will be involved in a coaching role for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20.
Dale Steyn took to social media platform X as he posted, "A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025.
"However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa.
"Two time winners here in SA20, let’s try make it THREE in a row."
SRH had a brilliant IPL last season but couldn’t get past the final hurdle as they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the summit clash. Steyn wasn’t unavailable for IPL 2024 due to personal reasons and SRH appointed former New Zealand fast bowler James Franklin to fill in his shoes.
Steyn had a stellar IPL career having represented SRH, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and now defunct Deccan Chargers. He led the Eastern Cape to consecutive SA20 titles and will aim for a third one.
Steyn took up the job back in 2021 when Tom Moody was in charge and since then the franchise has seen a number of overhauls. Vettori was handed the mantle ahead of the IPL 2024 and the former Kiwis spinner almost had the last laugh last campaign.
As per an ESPN Cricinfo report, SRH are all set to retain Heinrich Klaasen, captain Pat Cummins and Abhishek Sharma ahead of the IPL retention deadline. A whopping INR 23 crore will be splashed to retain the South African explosive batter as the first retainer.
It remains to be seen whether the franchise opts to retain three players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
