The first day of the Boxing Day Test was eventful as both India and Australia lit up a crowded MCG with some interesting moments on the pitch. A whopping 87,242 spectators were in attendance as it was the largest ever crowd recorded in a Test match between India and Australia.
Weather has been a spoilsport in the Border Gavaskar Trophy this time around. The Gabba Test was disrupted due to persistent rainfall and there have been expectations of severe heat in Melbourne during the fourth Test.
Now the rampaging Victoria bushfire has threatened to ruin the 4th Test as the rising heat caused by the fire in Melbourne could pose a significant health risk for both thye players and the spectators.
The Australian government is putting a strenuous effort to control the wildfire which has already affected 55,000 hectares of land. So what will the umpires do if the situation inside the ground worsens on day 2?
As per law 2.7.1, the umpires do have the authority to call off the game if they do feel the situation is not ideal for playing cricket. Similar things happened when Joe Root had to be hospitalised during the Sydney Test during the 2018 Ashes.
Coming to the game, Sam Konstas had a memorable debut as the 19 year old hit a majestic half-century on debut. He nullified the Jasprit Bumrah threat but the Indian vice-captain took three wickets to restrict Australia at 311 for six wickets.
Bumrah made Travis Head look like a novice as the left handed got out for a duck. Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja all chipped in with valuable runs and it will be exciting to see how things pan out on day two in Melbourne.
