It was a horror show for Team India on Day 2 of the ongoing 1st Test in Bengaluru against New Zealand as the home side huffed and puffed to get bundled out for a paltry 46 runs. It was a day, when nothing went right for the Indian batters as the Rohit Sharma-led side put up their lowest-ever total at home. This particular score also happens to be their third-highest total in Test cricket history.
But at the same time, the 2-time World Test Championship (WTC) runners-up also recreated an unwanted record, which happened way back in 1888, some 136 years back. After Australia, India became the only second team and the first Asian side to have got their five of their top 8 batters dismissed for a duck. Among the five batters, Ravichandran Ashwin went out for a first-ball duck and the list continues with Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan and even all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
In that 1888 match, the Aussies suffered a batting collapse in their second innings and their first four batsmen went back to the pavilion without troubling the English bowlers.
Speaking of the India innings, it was Matt Henry and Will O'Rourke, who tormented the home-side batters by picking up a fifer and a four-wicket haul respectively. The other lone wicket was taken by star pacer, Tim Southee for the visitors.
In the dismal batting display, it was Rishabh Pant, who managed to get a 20-run score and apart from him, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped in with 13 runs.
Next to this total, India were all-out for 42 runs as well back in the Lord's Test of 1974. Their lowest total, till date is 36-all out against Australia in the 2019-20 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
This is not the first time, India have been bundled out against the Kiwis under-100 at home. Back in the 1999 Mohali Test, they were all-out for just 83 runs.
