India suffered a crushing eight-wicket defeat to New Zealand in the first Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India were bowled out for 46 in the first innings but fought back hard to push the match into the fourth innings. Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant were the two cornerstones of the remarkable comeback. Sarfaraz scored his maiden Test hundred and scored a brilliant 150 while Rishabh Pant played an entertaining innings of 99 as India posted 462 in the second innings, setting New Zealand a target of 107 to win.
Pant looked in full flow with the bat, but he wasn't fully fit, which makes his innings even more special. Pant did not keep for India as he was hit on the knee. Dhruv Jurel took the gloves for India in the absence of Rishabh Pant. Indian captain Rohit Sharma provided an update on Rishabh Pant's injury and said he wasn't very comfortable running. Rohit said that Pant had a massive operation on his knee and went through a lot of trauma in the last few years which is why India wanted to give him extra rest before the second test.
"Pant had a massive operation on his knee. It's better to be careful. When he was batting, he wasn't comfortably running. We need to be extra careful. He has gone through a lot of trauma in the last couple of years, not easy to keep with pain so we needed him to have extra rest before the next Test," said Rohit Sharma after the first Test.
The second Test gets underway on October 24 in Pune and India would hope Pant recovers fully before the crucial test. If not, they might have to rest him from the game, with Dhruv Jurel playing ahead of him as a specialist keeper.
