BCCI is looking to add a coaching staff to the senior Indian men's team, specifically a batting coach after multiple batting debacles in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy led them to lose the title after a decade and concede the series 1-3. While no official announcement has been made, discussions within BCCI and the team management indicate a requirement to strengthen the support staff.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, some names, including former domestic cricket heavyweights, are being considered to become India's batting coach. No final decision has been made as of yet though.
India's coaching staff consists of bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip, in addition to head coach and former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir. Multiple times before, questions have been raised over Nayar and Ten Doeschate's role in the team.
Following India's tour Down Under and their recent rut of defeat in Tests, there has been immense criticism of the coaching staff's role and functioning, with players like ace batter Virat Kohli getting out similarly on regular occasions.
The role of the support staff was discussed in the review meeting in Mumbai on Saturday, January 11. According to an earlier report in PTI, with a crucial ODI tournament like the Champions Trophy scheduled in a month, any immediate reaction would impact the team and the support staff.
The exact nature of the discussion on support staff in that meeting cannot be confirmed but there might be a suggestion to try things with a different expert.
While most of the attention has been on the batting of India skipper Rohit Sharma and Kohli, which was below average for sure, it can be one of the reasons why there is a belief that a new addition to the coaching staff is required.
