Jasprit Bumrah has easily been India's most reliable bowler across all the formats. The 31-year-old ended up as the highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Bumrah sustained a back spasm and had to refrain from bowling in the second innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The 31-year-old proved to be a menace for the Australian batters as he troubled the hosts at a regular interval.
Bumrah also auditioned for the captaincy role with proficiency led India to a historical victory in Perth. His injury remains a concern but should he remain fit, he would be an automatic choice for Rohit Sharma's team in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Former England captain Mike Atherton heaped praises on the fast bowler. While answering questions on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast he told Naseer Hussain,
“Well, just glad that he wasn't in my era. He looks a nightmare to face. I always feel that the bowlers have got slightly unusual actions at the hardest.
"You know, some of the quickest bowlers that I faced, bowlers like Alan Donald and Brett Lee, had beautiful actions and you could kind of although they were unbelievably quick, you kind of got a clear sight of the ball and you know, you could almost regulate your own trigger movements and your rhythm.
“I think with Bumrah, that would be very difficult. You know, most batters these days have trigger movements, you know, those kinds of pre-movements before the ball is bowled.
“But how do you, your timing of your movement to Bumrah seems to me to be very awkward because he has that stuttering, stammering run up and then all of a sudden there's a thunderbolt comes down and as we know, he releases the ball a bit closer to the batter with that snap of the wrist and hyperextension of the elbow. So he looks a very difficult bowler to face to me. I'm glad I don't have to do it.”
