Dinesh Karthik made his SA20 debut for Paarl Royals in the league stage match against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. A veteran of 401 T20s, Karthik is playing under David Miller's captaincy. Aiden Markram is the captain of Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who have won both editions of SA20 played so far.
Karthik created history the moment he was included in the playing XI as he became the first Indian player to feature in SA20. An Indian player cannot play overseas T20 leagues unless he has retired from Indian cricket (IPL and domestic cricket).
Karthik retired from Indian cricket after IPL 2024 and he can play any overseas league in the world now. Many Indian players who have quit Indian cricket have played different leagues and Karthik has become the first Indian to play in SA20.
Karthik's move to SA20 also means that he cannot feature in IPL or Indian domestic cricket now. Under the BCCI's rules, a player cannot return to Indian cricket once he has played in a foreign league.
Dinesh Karthik's career
Dinesh Karthik had a long career for Team India. He played 26 Tests, 94 ODIs and 60 T20Is. The wicketkeeper-batsman made many comebacks in Team India throughout his career.
His final stint with the ODI team came in 2019. He made his return for the 2017 Champions Trophy and was dropped after the 2019 World Cup. Karthik made a shock return to the T20I team in 2022 and played in the World Cup that year. He lost his place in the national team after the ICC event.
Karthik took up commentary during his playing days and he has made a mark for himself. He will don the coach's hat in IPL 2025. Karthik was appointed RCB's mentor and batting coach in July 2024. He played for RCB for 4 years across 2 stints.
