The ICC on Wednesday (October 16) announced three new names into the Hall of Fame. AB de Villiers has been inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame along with Alastair Cook and Neetu David. Both de Villiers and Cook retired in 2018 and they have been bestowed with the honours after six years.
The fans were hoping for ICC to induct MS Dhoni into the Hall of Fame but that has yet to happen. He last represented India more than 5 years ago. Dhoni is one of the most successful captains to play international cricket and he deserved the induction. So why the ICC hasn't inducted him into the Hall of Fame yet?
There is a reason why Dhoni hasn't been inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame and he will have to wait for 10 more months for it. Under the ICC's rules, a player can only be inducted into the Hall of Fame five years from his official retirement date.
Dhoni played his last game for India in July 2019 but he retired from the game in August 2020. He will be eligible to be bestowed with the honour in August 2025.
MS Dhoni made his India debut in 2004 and played international cricket for 15 years. He joined India's leadership group in 2007 and captained the Men in Blue to a title win in the inaugural T20 World Cup. A year later, India won the tri-series in Australia. In 2009, India climbed to the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for the first time.
In 2011, India became the first team to win the 50-over World Cup at home. In 2013, Dhoni created history by becoming the first captain to win all three white-ball ICC trophies. He retired from Test cricket in 2014 while he relinquished the white-ball captaincy in January 2017.
