The Indian Cricket Team failed to reach the knockout stage of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team had to return empty-handed from the ICC event as their search for that coveted silverware hit a barrier again.
The BCCI will reportedly take a call on Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy future. As per an Indian Express report. India cricket’s governing body will sit with the Women’s team coach Amol Muzumdar and the meeting will take place ahead of the squad announcement for the New Zealand series which is scheduled to start on October 24.
India lost against New Zealand and Australia in the T20 World Cup which ended their hopes in the tournament. Inia have had a fair amount of success having reached the knockouts a number of times and even made it to the final in 2020 under the tutelage of Harmanpreet.
Harmanpreet was handed the mantle back in 2016 after India’s lacklustre display in the T20 World Cup on home soil. It seems Harmanpreet’s position doesn’t have any imminent threat but some of the support staff might face consequences.
A BCCI source told Indian Express, “The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything which the team wanted and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition.”
The next ICC ODI World Cup is scheduled to be held in India and it remains to be seen whether BCCI takes the big call to bring in a change in the leadership. Should there be a change in the captaincy, the new skipper will have substantial time before the 2025 World Cup.
