Sam Konstas showed nerve of steel as he tried a ramp shot off Jasprit Bumrah in the third over of the Boxing Day Test match against India. Konstas, Australia's fourth-youngest Test player, was handed his Baggy Green before the start of the play. He struggled in the opening over bowled by the India vice-captain.
The right-handed batsman scored his first run in international cricket on the second ball of the third over. On the fifth ball, Konstas decided to do something out of the box and he tried a ramp shot. He missed the ball completely and Rishabh Pant collected it safely behind the wickets.
Bumrah couldn't stop smiling as he made his way back to his bowling mark. The commentators were in splits while non-striker Usman Khwaja was all smiles.
Konstas continued to play 'T20 shots' as he scooped Bumrah for a boundary on the first ball of the seventh over. He followed up with a reverse scoop and cleared the fence. On the fifth ball, he followed up with another scoop which went to the boundary.
Konstas replaced Nathan McSweeney in the Test squad and was handed his Test debut. He has only played 11 first-class matches so far. He has 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries in the format.
India drop Shubman Gill
India made a big change in their playing XI and dropped Shubman Gill. The right-handed batsman managed to score 60 runs in 2 Tests he played before getting dropped. He has been replaced by Washington Sundar.
The spin-bowling all-rounder pipped R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to play the series opener in Perth. He was dropped for the next two Tests in Adelaide and Gabba.
Ravindra Jadeja, who played the Gabba Test, is part of the playing XI for the Boxing Day fixture. Rohit Sharma is set to bat at the top of the order.
