Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Wednesday broke former India captain Kapil Dev's record, to become the bowler with the most Test wickets for India in Australia. He bagged the wicket of opener Usman Khawaja in the third over of Australia's second innings to go level with Kapil Dev at 51 wickets Down Under in the longest format and then dismissed Marnus Labuschagne in the seventh over to surpass the India legend.
Bumrah has been India's best player in the ongoing series and is at the top of the wicket-takers chart. He currently has 21 wickets to his name at an average of 10.85, with Mitchell Starc far behind at 14 from three matches apiece.
In Australia's first innings, Bumrah finished with a spell of 28-9-76-6, picking the wickets of Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, centurions Steve Smith and Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh and Starc. The next best performance was from Mohammed Siraj, who picked two wickets.
Moreover, this is the fourth time that Bumrah has got the better of Khawaja. All of the ace India pacer's wickets against Australia have come Down Under since he has never faced them at home.
Most Test wickets for India in Australia
53 Jasprit Bumrah (Avg 17.21)
51 Kapil Dev (24.58)
49 Anil Kumble (37.73)
40 Ravichandran Ashwin (42.42)
35 Bishan Bedi (27.51)
Kapil Dev played 11 Tests in Australia from 1981 to 1992 and bowled at an impressive economy of 2.39. He had five five-fors Down Under, one of the most notables being an eight-wicket haul in Adelaide in December 1985, as he helped India draw the game, besides a marvellous 166-run knock from Sunil Gavaskar.
Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who featured in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide of the ongoing tour but was benched for the Brisbane Test, might go past Anil Kumble's record if he goes on to play in both Melbourne and Sydney, although that looks unlikely after Ravindra Jadeja's 77-run knock on Tuesday.
