Prithvi Shaw has once again lost his spot in the Mumbai cricket team and the selectors have ignored him for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shaw, who was dropped from the Mumbai team due to fitness issues, made his return for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but he failed to make an impact.
The selectors decided to drop him again and this could result in his season ending early. The right-handed batsman went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Shaw, who first hogged the limelight with his 546-run knock in Mumbai cricket, was tipped to become the next Sachin Tendulkar.
Shaw achieved this milestone just a few days after Sachin's retirement and the fans started comparing him with the Master Blaster. Shaw made quick progress and he captained India to a U19 World Cup win early in 2018. He made his Test debut in October of that year.
2 years after his debut, Shaw talked about comparisons with Sachin and revealed that there is pressure due to this. "There is pressure when people compare me to him. But I take it as a challenge. I try to play like him. He is the God of cricket," he told Delhi Capitals in 2020.
"I am a bottom-hand player and Sachin sir had asked me not to change my grip. I was young and I used to change my grip as per coaches’ advice. But after Sachin sir told me, I did not change my grip."
Shaw retained his place in the Test team when India toured Australia in 2020/21. He was dropped after his failure in the series opener. He made another Test comeback during the England tour in 2021 but didn't get a chance.
Shaw has played 5 Tests, 6 ODIs and one T20I since his debut in 2018. The 25-year-old made his T20I comeback early in 2023 but he wasn't included in the playing XI. He has age on his side and can make another comeback by performing in domestic cricket. He can be recalled to the Mumbai team after the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
