Ace India batter Virat Kohli has admitted that after he scored his maiden T20I hundred, he called up his wife and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma and was in tears while speaking to her. Notably, that century against Afghanistan in the 2022 Asia Cup broke a long jinx for Kohli, who wasn't able to score a hundred since November 2019.
In an old conversation with sports presenter Jatin Sapru, Kohli opened up about his emotional response to scoring the century in the tournament.
The hundred against Afghanistan marked his first-ever hundred in T20Is, breaking a long stretch without reaching a century in international cricket.
Kohli said that he was quite surprised to find himself in that situation, not expecting himself to score a T20I hundred after so many years in the game. He added that as he approached 94, the thought crossed his mind that he could smack the elusive century.
Kohli followed it up with a six and after years in the game, he suddenly had a T20I hundred, a milestone many thought he wouldn't be able to cross.
In that small passage of time, Kohli found himself laughing at the situation, thinking how long he had yearned for a bagful of runs only for the moment to be over in an instant.
"But the moment I got there, I laughed so hard. Iske liye ro raha tha do saal se," Kohli said while speaking to Sapru.
Kohli described the fleeting nature of the hundred, as to how quickly the moment passed. What struck him most was the humour around how steadily the moment just went on, despite waiting for it for the longest time.
When he shared the experience of scoring the hundred with Anushka, Kohli admitted that he found himself in tears.
“When I spoke to Anushka, I was in tears," Kohli said.
