The Indian women's cricket team put themselves back in strong contention to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup after a huge 82-run win over Sri Lanka in their third match of the tournament at the Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday (October 9).This is the Women in Blue's biggest-ever victory in the history of the Women's T20 World Cup.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, India posted the highest score of the tournament with a total of 172 on the board. Smriti Mandhana (50 in 28) and Shafali Verma (43 in 40) gave the Women in Blue a solid start with a 98-run partnership. Later, Harmanpreet Kaur put the 2020 runners up on top with a quick-fire knock of 52 in 27 balls.
In reply, the Sri Lankan top order crumbled to 6-3 as the Indian bowlers gave them no breathing space.

How Can India Qualify For Semi-Finals?

With the big win, India have reduced the damage to their net-run rate (NRR) and given themselves a realistic chance of making it to the semi-final. India's NRR is now positive (+0.576) and the second-best in the group. However, they still have an uphill task as they need to beat Australia on Sunday (October 13) and still have an eye on other results.

India's Women's T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-Final Scenario

With the major NRR boost, India can hope to qualify with a win over Australia, but they will still need to keep an eye on the results of New Zealand's matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The White Ferns could better their rate and go past India in the two matches. Ideally, the Women in Blue will need at least one of Pakistan or Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand, which will clear the path for them.

Can India Qualify Without Beating Australia?

In theory, India can qualify without beating Australia but that will need a number of things going their way. Firstly, the Harmanpreet-led side will have to hope that New Zealand lose at least one of their games against either Pakistan or Sri Lanka. Morever if Pakistan defeat New Zealand, the Women in Blue need the Fatima Sana-led team to lose to Australia.
