India are all set to play the second Test of the three-match series against New Zealand in Pune from October 24, a must-win encounter for the hosts. The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in the city has hosted just two Tests in its 12 years of existence and the two matches have provided India with contrasting results, an embarrassing defeat and a huge win.
India had a memorable outing when they locked horns with South Africa back in October 2019 in Pune, the last Test played at this venue. India had won the game by an innings and 137 runs.
Ace batter Virat Kohli had won the Player of the Match award as the home side took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

What Happened In The Match?

Opting to bat first, India declared their innings on a whopping 601/5 on Day 2. Having lost Rohit Sharma in the 10th over, Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara added 138 runs for the second wicket to take India to a comfortable position. After the latter was dismissed for 58 in the 51st over, Agarwal and then skipper Kohli added 35 runs for the third wicket.
Agarwal was dismissed in the 61st over for a brilliant 108 after he had scored a match-winning 215 in the first Test of the series. By the end of the first day, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane had added 75 runs for the third wicket and ended the day on 273/3, with Kohli unbeaten on 68.
The Indian captain and Rahane eventually built a 178-run partnership before the latter was dismissed for 59. Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja then added a whopping 225 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was dismissed for 91, missing out on a well-deserved hundred. At the fall of his wicket, Indis declared with Kohli unbeaten on 254.
In reply, skipper Faf du Plessis (64) and Keshav Maharaj (72) fought for South Africa but they were bowled out for 275, with Ravichandran Ashwin picking four wickets. Kohli made the visitors follow on and they were bowled out for 189, with Umesh Yadav and Jadeja picking three wickets apiece.
