The upcoming Australian tour could define India’s World Test Championship future as it stands. Rohit Sharma will lead India in a five match Test series starting from November this year.
The rivalry between India and Australia has peaked in the last few years and Virat Kohli’s side is expected to face a tough challenge on Australian soil. The Australian side has emerged as India’s one of the arch-rivals and all the focus will be shifted on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy.
Australian captain Pat Cummins picked up his most memorable knock by an Indian in the BGT and in a major surprise, he didn’t pick Rishabh Pant’s valiant 89 at the Gabba in Brisbane which helped India to secure a majestic Test series win on Australian soil.
As per Cummins, the greatest knock stands to be Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 not out against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground back in 2004. In an interaction with Star Sports, he said, “The only one I can remember is Sachin Tendulkar in Sydney.”
India amassed a massive 705 runs riding on Sachin’s brilliance and the match ended in a draw. On the back of successive failures, the Master Blaster decided not to indulge in any lucrative deliveries outside the off stump and he didn’t play a single cover drive which he had mastered in his decorated career.
It brought an end to his Test century drought and further solidified his position as one of the greatest players in the red ball format.
Pant’s 89 runs too will be counted as one of the golden innings as long as the BGT is concerned. The 27 year old was at his stupendous best and schooled the entire Australian bowling lineup with his unorthodox batting style.
Pant will once again be on focus when India take on New Zealand in the second Test match in Pune. The wicketkeeper has reportedly been declared fit and is likely to retain his place in the starting lineup.
