  • Root scored the 35th Test century of his career
  • Root went past Alaister Cook's long-standing record
Star England batter Joe Root continued his red-hot form in Test cricket during the first Test match between England and Pakistan at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The 33-year-old looked flawless on the crease despite being forced to bat at number three as he scored the 35th Test century of his career.
As a result of his incredible ton, which is his fifth in 2024, the former England batter has gone past Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Younis Khan, and Mahela Jayawardene in the elite list of players with the most Test tons. Each of the four mentioned players had scored 34 Test tons in their careers.
Root is now just one behind Rahul Dravid (36) and is sixth on the all-time list of most centuries in Test cricket history.

Joe Root Shatters Alaister Cook's All-Time Record

Through the course of the innings, Root created history and broke Alaister Cook's (12472) record for the most runs by an English batter in Test cricket history. The 33-year-old also became the first player from England to complete 12,500 runs in the longest format. Root is now also fifth in the list of players with most runs in Test cricket history across the globe, with only Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Rahul Dravid above him.
Most Runs In Test Cricket History
Player Matches Test Runs Country
Sachin Tendulkar 200 15921 India
Ricky Ponting 168 13378 Australia
Jacques Kallis 166 13289 South Africa
Rahul Dravid 164 13288 India
Joe Root 147 12522* Englnad
Alaister Cook 161 12472 England
Root and Cook are the only two English players in history to cross the 10,000-run mark. The third-highest English run-getter is Graham Gooch, who made 8900 runs in his Test career after playing 118 Test matches.
Root is less than 1400 runs from going past Ricky Ponting and becoming the second-highest run-getter in Test cricket history. He also has a realistic chance of breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record (15921) for the most runs in Test cricket history which has largely seemed an unbreakable record.
