After the loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI issued a strict diktat stating that players needed to play the Ranji Trophy to be considered for selection in the Test side. In the recent round of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25, most of the top stars in the Team India Test side took part, including captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit returned to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy after almost 10 years. However, not only did he fail with the bat on his return, but Mumbai also achieved a shocking feat after 10 years.
Jammu and Kashmir stunned reigning Ranji Trophy Champions Mumbai, as they defeated them in the premier Indian domestic first-class tournament after 10 long years at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in BKC, Mumbai. The underdogs won the match by a margin of 5 wickets.
Rohit Sharma could not perform well with the bat as well he scored 4 and 23 in both the innings.

Shardul Thakur Heroics In Vain
In the first innings, Mumbai were all out for just 120 runs by the Jammu and Kashmir bowlers. Rohit Sharma failed, but so did his Team India opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal. He got out for just 4 runs. They lost their first 7 wickets for 47 runs before Shardul Thakur and Tanush Kotian fought back and scored 63 runs for the 8th wicket. Shardul slammed a half-century. Umar Nazir and Yudhvir Singh Charak picked up 4 wickets each for J&K.
On the other hand, the away side scored 206 in the second innings riding on a half-century by opener Shubham Khajuria, and a 44 by Abid Mushtaq. Mohit Avasthi picked up 5 wickets for Mumbai.
Shardul Thakur was the star of the show with the bat as he slammed 119 runs in the second innings with Mumbai putting up 290. Tanush Kotian ably supported him with a 65-run knock. Shubham Khajoria, Vivraant Sharma and Abid Mushtaq led the charge as Jammu and Kasmir scored 207 and successfully chased down the target of 207.
