Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said that Jasprit Bumrah's bowling throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was the best series of pace bowling he had ever seen, in what has come as a massive praise from the legend. He added that the ace India pacer was so good that he even made some of Australia's big-ticket top-order batters look silly.
Bumrah finished as the leading wicket-taker with an incredible tally. However, India lost the series 1-3 after the six-wicket loss in the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He was named Player of the Series for his exploits.
During his iconic run, Bumrah overtook former India skipper Kapil Dev, to hold the record for most Test wickets by an Indian Down Under, 64 scalps at 17.15 compared to Kapil's 51 at 24.58.
"No doubt, it's probably the best series of fast bowling I've ever seen. Yes, they had good conditions, the pacers, for most of this series. But when you watched him (Bumrah) bowl compared to anyone else in the series, he made batting look so much harder," Ponting was quoted as saying by ICC.
“There's a lot of quality batting in that Australian top-order as well but he made all of them at different times look silly," Ponting added.
Bumrah, who had led India to a victory over Australia in Perth in the first Test, did not bowl on the third and final day of the fifth game in Sydney after experiencing back spasms on Saturday, January 4.
Bumrah finished the five-match series with 32 wickets at an average of 13. The next best tally was of Australia skipper Pat Cummins, who picked 25 wickets at an average of 21.36. He also clocked brilliant figures of 28-9-76-6, the third-best of the series, in Brisbane last month, in the game which ended in a draw.
