Former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah has announced his retirement from T20Is. The 38-year-old is all set to play his last T20I match in the third game against India in Hyderabad.
India will face Bangladesh in the second T20I in Delhi on Wednesday. Suryakumar Yadav’s men are leading the three match T20I series 1-0 and will look to seal the series. Before the ongoing series, India decimated Bangladesh in the series whitewashing them 2-0.
Mahmudullah has been a warrior for Bangladesh having shifted the gear back in 2016. With the insistence of coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, Mahmudullah changed his role and was very successful as a finisher.
He also led Bangladesh in the shortest format and will hang up his boots as the joint third most capped player in T20I history. He has been involved in 139 T20I games so far and with two more games to play he will retire with 141 games.
He didn’t have the best of the T20 World Cup and also became the oldest player to feature in the T20Is earlier this year. Mahmudullah revealed he already decided before the series about his retirement and also spoke with the respective stakeholders including the Bangladesh coach and the captain before announcing his decision.
As quoted by ESPN Cricinfo he said, "I am retiring from T20I cricket after the last game of this series. I was pre-decided before coming here," Mahmudullah said. "I had a chat with my family. I spoke to the coach [Chandika Hathurusinghe], captain [Najmul Hossain Shanto], chief selector [Gazi Ashraf Hossain] and the board president [Faruque Ahmed] as well. I think it is the right time to move on from this format for me and the team. Especially with the World Cup coming up in less than two years. I will concentrate on the one-day game."
