Sam Konstas has been the subject of a conversation following his blockbuster debut in Melbourne. The 19 year old was very impressive with his audacious attempt to go for the kill against the Indian bowling lineup led by the sensational Jasprit Bumrah.
Konstas looked a bit shaky as Bumrah did manage to send him on the back foot. But the Aussie youngster managed to navigate his way through with some blazing shots including a reverse scoop of Jasprit Bumrah.
He eventually was dismissed for 60 but the young sensation has shown he is here to stay. Konstas also had an on-field altercation with Virat Kohli as the Indian star shoulder barged him in the first innings and the 36 year old was later imposed a 20% fine by the ICC for his conduct.
Steven Smith, who further dazzled in Melbourne with another magnificent century, heaped praise on Konstas. As quoted by Fox Sports he said, “I don’t even know how Sam handled it. How did Sam handle it? I don’t think much fazes the young kid, as we saw yesterday.
“He was reverse ramping Bumrah and I was having a heart attack up in the box. But I thought it was all good. No stress.”
On being asked if he endorses this new har hitting method in Test cricket he replied,
“If that is the future, maybe it is time for me to finish.
“I mean, you have to have some serious courage to do what he did yesterday.
“And you know that first over where Bumrah beat him … three or four times and bowled some really nice balls, I actually thought he played them really well. He played down the line and they just did too much and beat the outside edge.
“(But) then for a kid to have the confidence to start ‘lapping’ and ‘reverse lapping’ arguably one of the best bowlers that has played the game, (that) shows some serious confidence in the kid and real courage.”
