England batter Joe Root continued to rewrite the record books after becoming the first player in the world to achieve a huge feat during the second day of play in the first Test between Pakistan and England at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (October 8).
The 33-year-old walked out to bat after stand-in skipper Ollie Pope was dismissed. Root was forced to bat at number three after England opener Ben Duckett suffered a finger injury. With the visitors in trouble after conceding 556 runs in the first innings, the ex-England captain and Zak Crawley stabilised England's innings with a steady 92-run partnership.
At Stumps on Day 2, England are 96-1 with both Crawley (64) and Root (32) on the crease.
Joe Root Creates History
Root has become the first player in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC) to complete 5000 runs. The England star maintains a healthy lead at the top of the leading run-getters list in WTC history, with no other player even scoring 4000 runs so far.
The England star completed the 5000-run mark in his 107th innings. He has an average of 51.59 with 16 centuries and 20 half-centuries to his name.

Root has had the best run of his career in Test cricket since the start of the WTC in 2019. He finished as the second-highest run-getter of the first-ever WTC cycle (2019-21) with 1660 runs. He finished just 15 runs behind Labuschagne. He finished at the top of the list in the second cycle (2021-23) with 1915 runs. He is also leading the list in the third cycle (2023-25), which is currently taking place with 1430 runs in 30 innings. Among Indians,
Rohit Sharma is the highest run-getter in WTC history with 2594 runs in 34 matches (58 innings). He is on the 8th spot in the overall list.
