With just four days remaining before the Boxing Day Test match between India and Australia begins, the visitors were hit with a major injury blow during their net session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday (December 22) as skipper Rohit Sharma suffered a painful blow.
While batting in the nets, Rohit was hit on his left knee and appeared evidently in discomfort. The Indian team's physio was quick to take action and applied an ice pack on the Indian captain's left leg. However, it was removed after 25-30 minutes, and the Indian captain appeared to move fine later. More details on the injury are still awaited, and there is no hint at the moment that he will not be fit for the fourth Test scheduled to start on Thursday (December 26).
The injury scare comes amid a horror run of form for the Indian captain in Test cricket. In the 2024-25 season, Rohit has made just 152 runs in 13 innings at an average of 11.69 with just one half-century.
The 37-year-old missed the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) due to personal reasons. He returned to lead the team in the second Test but in a new role after giving up his opening spot following Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul's incredible contribution in India's victory at Perth.
Batting at number six, Rohit has made just 19 runs in three innings so far in the series at an average of 6.33.
The MCG Test is a vital one in the race to win the BGT and reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final for both sides. The series is currently level 1-1. The two teams played each other in the 2023 WTC final. India has won the last four BGTs and will look to retain it for the fifth time in a row.
