The news was confirmed by his family and Mexican wrestling promoter Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.

Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Díaz, was a pivotal figure in Mexico's lucha libre scene and enjoyed a near 50-year career. He wrestled in prominent wrestling organisations including Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association (WWA).

In addition to his own storied career, Misterio Sr. was known for mentoring numerous wrestlers, including his nephew, WWE's Rey Mysterio, who became a three-time world champion. Misterio Sr. also trained stars such as Konnan, Psicosis, Halloween, and Damian 666.

The cause of his death has not been immediately disclosed, but it comes just weeks after the passing of Rey Mysterio’s father, Robert Gutierrez.

Misterio’s daughter, Aalyah Gutierrez, expressed her gratitude for her late uncle on social media. "Eternally grateful for you," she wrote. "Without you, my dad wouldn’t be the person or fighter he is today. Rest in peace, uncle."
