Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan has revealed that Virat Kohli once broke down during the 2018 tour of England after India couldn't win a game despite him being the highest scorer. Kohli is in Australia currently for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy and has been going through inconsistent form, with nothing much to show after his century in Perth.
Revealing one of Kohli's low moments, Dhawan said how Anushka Sharma once shared an incident with him where the star batter was very dejected after India's defeat to England in a game during the 2018 tour.
Kohli has recently spoken up about his troubles with mental health, especially during a long phase between 2019 and 2022 where runs had severely dried up.
“Virat, I mean, everything he’s been through, the times he’s not been in good form, some insights that Anushka shared with me, about his mindset," Dhawan said while speaking on The Ranveer Show.
"I think it was a Nottingham Test, where India had lost and she said she didn’t attend that game that day. She came back, she didn’t know where Virat was and she came to the room and saw him lying down, literally crying. He took the whole thing on himself," Dhawan said.
Although it's not very clear as to which the Bollywood actor referred to, it is highly likely that it might be the first match of the 2018 tour, in Birmingham in August. Skipper Kohli had scored 149 and 51 in two innings but India were bowled out for 162 while chasing 194, as Ben Stokes picked four wickets.
"How he took the whole thing on himself like I failed when he was still the highest scorer that day. He was the captain of the side," Dhawan said.
India lost that Test series 4-1 under Kohli's captaincy, despite him finishing with 593 runs in 10 innings at a stunning average close to 60.
