Leading the team in Harmanpreet Kaur's absence, Smriti Mandhana etched her name in the history books during the series decider against West Indies on Thursday (December 19) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as she continued her red-hot form in international cricket.
After the visitors won the toss and chose to bowl first, Mandhana gave India a rapid start as the Women in Blue put up 61 runs on the board in the powerplay. The stand-in Indian captain hit boundaries on seven consecutive balls from Chinelle Henry and Deandra Dottin.
Mandhana completed her half-century in just 27 balls and broke a long-standing world record of Suzie Bates. She made 77 runs in 47 balls before being dismissed by Dottin as India posted a huge total of 217.
Smriti Mandhana Creates History
Mandhana's half-century marked the 30th half-century of her career in T20Is meaning she now holds the record for the most 50+ scores by a woman cricketer in the shortest format of the game. Bates made 29 50+ scores in her career which includes 28 half-centuries and one ton.

Mandhana also set another huge world record by registering a unique distinction of scoring the most Women's T20I runs in a single calendar year. She broke legendary Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu's record, also set in 2024. Mandhana is only the fourth women's player in history to score more than 700 runs in a year.

Mandhana has had a dream year with the bat across formats and is set to be a leading contender for the Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year award. In the ongoing series, she scored a half-century in all three matches and made 193 at an average of 64.33.
In the ODI format, she made four tons, which is the most by any women's cricketer in a year. Mandhana also hit a ton against South Africa in the sole Test match India played in 2024. Overall, she has made 599 runs in 10 ODIs in 2024 at an average of 59.90.
