Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement could be the tip of the iceberg as a host of senior players could soon follow in the footsteps of the 38 year old. As per a Cricbuzz report, the Indian Cricket team is all set to undergo a transition and it could start with the England series next summer.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja bid adieu to the shortest format after India’s triumph in the ICC T20 World Cup earlier this year. Both Virat and Rohit have endured underwhelming form and the latter especially has struggled to set the ball rolling.
With the Border Gavaskar Trophy tied at 1-1, India now stand a very good chance to take the command in the remaining two Test matches. The likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara were ignored by the selectors for the Australian tour while Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Umesh Yadav haven’t donned the Indian jersey for quite a while.
The Cricbuzz report stated, “How much of this decision is planned, voluntary, or subtly influenced is difficult to determine, but the Indian team is expected to undergo a transformation soon - possibly by the start of their next Test series in England in the coming summer of 2025. As in the past, the credit or discredit will likely be linked to the Test series in Australia. Over the years, Australia tours have gained a notorious reputation for bringing cricketing careers to an agonising end.”
Virat too has faced severe criticism for his nature of getting out to deliveries outside off stumps on Australian soil. If India fail to reach the World Test Championship final for the first time there is a distinct possibility that the 36 year old would take a call on his decorated Test career.
