'Maybe Humiliation': R Ashwin's Father Makes Shocking Claim On Spin Wizard's Sudden Retirement Call (Source: AP)
R Ashwin's sudden retirement from international cricket left many by surprise. Ashwin could have played in Melbourne and Sydney, but the spin wizard decided to quit mid-way through the series. Ashwin landed in Chennai on Thursday and was welcomed by emotional parents at the airport.
Ashwin's father reacted to the ace spinner's retirement and said it came as a shock to the family. Ashwin's father made a shocking remark and alleged that 'humiliation' could be one of the reasons why the veteran announced sudden retirement. Ashwin wasn't picked in the Perth Test but was called into the XI for the Adelaide game before being dropped again. Ashwin was a consistent performer for India, but he didn't get many chances overseas in the last few years.
"I too came to know last minute, actually," Ashwin's father told News 18. "What was going on in his mind I don't know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feeling at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued."
"(Retiring) is his (Ashwin's) wish and desire, I cannot interfere in that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation," he added.
"No doubt about it (emotional moment for the family) because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change, retirement, gave us really kind of a shock," he added.
Ashwin's father said that the veteran's retirement is an emotional moment for the family, however, he stressed the fact that his son was not treated properly which could have prompted him to take such a call.
"Definitely, no doubt about it (being emotional for the family), because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change - retirement - gave us really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting it because humiliation was going on. How long he can tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own," Ravichandran said.
Ashwin ended his career as an all-time great, with 765 wickets to his name across formats, the second best from India and 11th best overall.
