The second Test against Australia in Adelaide turned out to be R Ashwin's last international game as the veteran announced his retirement. Ashwin - a modern-day great, ended his career with 765 wickets across formats. He was at his best in Tests, taking 537 wickets, the second most by an Indian and fifth overall. In addition to his international record as a bowler, Ashwin contributed heavily with the bat and notched up six Test hundreds for India, with most of them coming with India in trouble.
Ashwin was a character. He was well respected in the dressing room and shared a good camaraderie with the players as well as the support staff, and his absence will be felt in the dressing room without a doubt.
Meanwhile, the BCCI shared a video to showcase how the ace spinner used to lift the moods of the Indian players and support staff. In the hilarious video, Ashwin turned bowling coach for the support staff.
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team left for Melbourne for the fourth Test from December 26 while R Ashwin returned to Chennai. Ashwin in an emotional speech in dressing room said that he would be keeping a keen eye on the remaining two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“I will be taking a flight back home. But I will be tuned in to watch how well you guys go in Melbourne. I will be looking forward to each one of your performances.
“The international cricketer in me might have come to an end, but the cricket nut in me will never come to an end. All the very best. If at all, you guys need anything, I am just a phone call away,” Ashwin added.
