R Ashwin ended his international career in Australia and made the shocking retirement announcement after the Gabba Test match. The senior spinner had seemingly decided to quit the game after the Perth Test match. As per Rohit Sharma, he was convinced to play the third Test in Adelaide.
Ashwin was once again benched for the Gabba game and he decided to retire after the drawn affair. Ashwin's decision to quit the game reminded many fans of MS Dhoni and a huge similarity surfaced between the two retirements.
On December 30, 2014, MS Dhoni surprised one and all by announcing a shock retirement from Test cricket. The third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw and the former captain decided to hang up his boots. Ashwin was part of the squad for the series.
10 years later, Ashwin also decided to retire in Australia - after the third Test match of the series. There are still two Tests left to be played. The fact that Ashwin and Dhoni retired in Australia left many fans surprised. Dhoni played his last game for India in England during the 2019 World Cup.
Interestingly, Ashwin was benched for the first Test in Adelaide in 2014 as Virat Kohli picked Karn Sharma ahead of him. And 10 years later, the management had to convince Ashwin to play at the same venue.
One of the greatest all-rounders in Test cricket, Ashwin finished his Test career with 106 caps. The 38-year-old scored 3503 runs and scalped 537 wickets in red-ball cricket. He hit six centuries.
Ashwin tally of 537 wickets includes 37 five-fers and 8 ten-fers. Ashwin, who was never dropped from the Test squad after his maiden call-up, was always a regular in home conditions. He did get dropped from the playing XI in SENA countries. He was on the bench in the Gabba Test match.
