Mohammed Shami's fitness has been the subject of a major debate. The Indian fast bowler last played in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad.
Shami underwent ankle surgery after the World Cup and recently represented Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in a bid to prove his fitness. As per reports, Shami has been closely monitored by the National Cricket Academy's sports science department but he is yet to get the clearance to fly down to Australia for the remaining of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Apart from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, India used Harshit Rana and Akash Deep as the third pacer and Shami's presence would surely give them a major boost.
In the post match press conference, captain Rohit Sharma was asked whether he has any update on Shami and the 37 year old vented his frustration at the NCA. "It's high time someone from NCA talks about Mohammed Shami in public. Those are the people working with him. There have been some complaints about his knee despite him playing domestic. The last thing we want is a breakdown in the middle of a match. The door is open if the guys in NCA say he's ok."
Coming to the match, the rain interrupted the Brisbane Test ended in a draw. After Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah's heroics to avoid follow-on, a draw seemed to be a likely outcome. Australia decided to play with their heart out in the second innings and could only manage to post 89 runs at the expense of seven wickets before Pat Cummins decided to declare.
India barely batted in the second innings as further rain interrupted the match. The series is currently tied at 1-1 and the next match will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26.
