KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Suryakumar Yadav denied a single to complete his century
  • Suryakumar was dismissed after completing his century
  • Suryakumar was leading India in that series
India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav sent a message to his team after the series win over Bangladesh and said that he wants 'selfless' cricketers in the team irrespective of the score they are batting on. The captain praised Sanju Samson and said that the opening batsman did the same thing. We've achieved a lot as a team. I want to have selfless cricketers in my team. We want to be a selfless team," Suryakumar said.
"As Hardik said, we want to enjoy each others' performance on the field, off the field, spend as much time as possible and that camaraderie is carrying on the field and we are having some fun. The chat around the team has been like that, Gauti bhai said the same at the start of the series and when we went to Sri Lanka as well, no one is bigger than the team. If you are on 99 or 49 or anything, if you feel you have to hit a ball out of the park for the team, you have to hit it and the same thing Sanju did and I am really happy for him."
Soon after Suryakumar's 'selfless' comment went viral on X, a video of him denying a single on the final delivery of the game went viral on X. The right-handed batsman was batting on 98 and a single on the last delivery of the 19th over would have meant that he remained at the non-striker end. Hence, he denied a single to Jitesh Sharma.
It happened during the T20I series against South Africa in December 2023, where Suryakumar was leading the team. He ran a double on the first delivery of the 20th over to complete his century and got out on the next ball. Jitesh got out on the fifth ball of the 20th over.
Courtesy of SKY's century, India put on a big total of 201 on the board. The Men in Blue won the game by a big 106-run margin. Next month, India are set to tour South Africa for a four-match T20I series. Suryakumar will return to the rainbow nation as the full-time Indian captain.
