Ace India batter Virat Kohli was seen leaving from the Mumbai airport on Sunday morning for Bengaluru, where India will play the first Test against New Zealand. It will start on October 16 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the city, a coveted and hallowed venue.
The venue is a special one for Kohli, having represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the stadium for the past 16 years and he is expected to receive a rousing reception.
The second Test between India and New Zealand will be played in Pune from October 24, while the final game of the series will be played in Mumbai beginning November 1. Watch Kohli's departure video here:
Kohli was last seen in action in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh last month. He didn't have a great start, scoring just six and 17 in the two innings in the first Test.
Kohli came back well in the second game, scoring 47 and 29 in the two innings in the second Test. He has represented India in 115 Tests, scoring 8947 runs at an average of 48.89.
Kohli requires 53 more runs to become the fourth Indian to score 9000 Test runs. He is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming series against New Zealand as well as the tour of Australia that begins later next month, in Perth.
Kohli has a good Test record against New Zealand, scoring 866 runs in 11 games, including three half-centuries and as many hundreds. In India, he has scored 4243 runs in 52 matches, at a stunning average of 58.93, with 14 centuries.
Against New Zealand in Bengaluru in August 2012, Kohli scored his first Test hundred in India. But his latest outing in the city against Sri Lanka in 2022 didn't yield many runs, as he scored 23 and 13 in two innings.
