There was only one change in the squad and Yash Dayal, who didn't get to make his debut against Bangladesh, was dropped. The selectors also named a vice-captain for the series. The selectors, surprisingly, did not name a vice-captain for the Bangladesh series.
The Ajit Agarkar-headed selection committee has retained Jasprit Bumrah as the vice-captain, seemingly confirming that he will lead Team India in a Test match against Australia. As per reports, Rohit Sharma is set to miss a Test match Down Under due to personal reasons.
The vice-captain will fill in for Rohit and lead the national team. The BCCI's release all but confirms that Bumrah will once again lead Team India. The right-arm pacer joined the leadership group in 2022 and donned the vice-captain's hat.
He made his captaincy debut in international cricket in the one-off Test match against England in July 2022. Bumrah got injured later in 2022 and spent ample time off the field.
He made his return in the T20I series against Ireland in 2023. Bumrah was named the captain upon his comeback. He wasn't part of the leadership group in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Shubman Gill, who was confirmed as India's white-ball vice-captain, missed out on the job in Tests. The right-handed batsman can become part of the group in the future.
Rishabh Pant has also been part of the leadership group but he was ignored for vice-captaincy in 2022. He has captained India in T20Is. KL Rahul, who has led India in all three formats, wasn't in contention to make his return as vice-captain. He was sacked from vice-captaincy during the home series against Australia in 2023.
The India-New Zealand Test series kicks off on October 16 in Bengaluru. The next two Tests will be played in Pune and Mumbai from October 24 and November 1, respectively.
